MaryJane Shimsky, Endorsed Candidate of the Westchester Democratic Committee, Emerges Victorious in Forum in the 92nd Assembly District

WESTCHESTER, N.Y. - Democrat MaryJane Shimsky, running for Assembly in the 92nd Assembly District, bested incumbent Tom Abinanti in Wednesday night’s League of Women Voters Forum.

“Last night the differences between my opponent and myself were made abundantly clear to the voters. I will take a collaborative, data-driven, and results-oriented approach to solving problems. I believe I have the skills, experience, and relationships to deliver for our community,” said Shimsky. “My opponent is focused on blaming other Democrats for the erosion of his support, yet he is the one who voted against tenants, who voted against immigrants, who introduced radically irresponsible anti-vax legislation, and who voted with the Republicans against allowing local control of handgun fees.”

The debate covered topics including the State budget, infrastructure, economic development, affordable housing, health care, the environment, "good cause" eviction, and Edgemont incorporation. Shimsky emphasized her record as a problem-solver and collaborator whose record as a County Legislator includes passage of nearly $2 billion in bonded capital projects, expanded access to child care, and the women’s clinic access bill which will soon come for a vote before the Board.

Refuting Abinanti’s attacks on the current Westchester County Board of Legislators, Shimsky reminded the audience of the Board’s historic progress on social justice legislation, infrastructure repair, stormwater management, public safety, and public health. “We’re taking actions to fix problems and help people live better lives. Mr. Abinanti should take responsibility for his inattention at the State level to flooding and other serious issues affecting people in the 92nd Assembly District,” said Shimsky.

First elected to the Board of Legislators in 2011, Shimsky has delivered infrastructure improvements, advanced resiliency and pollution-cutting initiatives, and fought to improve public health, including addressing the opioid epidemic. She became Majority Leader in 2020 and represents the 12th District which includes most of the Town of Greenburgh (Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings-on-Hudson, Irvington, Edgemont, and much of Hartsdale). From 2007 to 2010, she was Community Relations Director for Assemblyman Richard Brodsky. Shimsky graduated from Yale University, and earned her law degree from New York University School of Law and her PhD in History from the City University of New York. She has been endorsed by the Westchester County Democratic Committee’s 92nd Assembly District members and the New York Working Families Party.

The Primary Election will be on June 28th, 2022. For more information, please visit https://shimsky4assembly.com
